Child Custody and Support

Durham Child Support and Child Custody Attorney

Kathy Williams Richardson - Richardson Law Firm, PLLC

Whether you are involved in a divorce, or you want to establish and protect your parental rights outside of marriage, you need an attorney on your side to handle legal child custody, visitation and support issues. If you don't know what rights you do or do not have as a parent, then you can't protect them.

At the Richardson Law Firm, PLLC in Durham, we represent North Carolina parents involved in divorce or other disputes that involve the residence and support of children. We understand how important a solid and healthy relationship with their children is, and we will work tirelessly to protect your rights in and out of the courtroom.

The Important Factors of Support and Custody Agreements

As with all aspects of our family law and divorce practice, we work to open the lines of communication and find collaborative resolutions wherever possible. We know that few parents want to pay the expense of lengthy litigation or drag their children into contentious and painful arguments. We also recognize, however, that sometimes it is necessary to fight to make sure your rights are fully protected.

Our lawyer has helped clients across the city and across the region strike the right balance between negotiation, compromise and litigation. We work with you every step of the way to resolve issues of:

  • Child custody: Many factors can go into custody and visitation decisions, including the time, resources and ability each parent can contribute to a supportive environment. The best solution is often the one you create for yourselves, but when your parental rights are at risk we will fight aggressively to protect your relationship with your child. Whether you are involved in divorce, or you have a child outside of marriage, we work to help you build the right parenting arrangement.
  • Child support: Largely defined by a statute mandated child support calculation, there is relatively little room for negotiation on the final responsibilities of each parent. It is, however, very important to work with counsel that can make sure the calculation is properly handled, or else you could end up with a larger support burden than is equitable.

At the Richardson Law Firm, PLLC we also work with clients in both post-divorce modifications of support agreements and agreement enforcement issues.
